More rains forecast for north of Namibia this week

WERNER MENGES

CONTINUED rains can be expected over the northern areas of Namibia this week - but the rainfall chances for the central and southern areas look less promising.

Weather forecaster Olga Tjiueza of the Meteorological Service of Namibia told The Namibian yesterday that the current rains are expected to stay confined to the north of the country for the rest of this week, with chances for rain in the southern areas possibly improving only by the end of the week.

Heavy rains that had been forecast for the northeastern, eastern and southeastern parts of Namibia last week ended up materialising mostly in the northeast only.

Weather forecaster Odillo Kgobetsi explained late last week that winds from the south and southwest caused dry air over the south of the country last week, but that this situation was turning around, with improved chances for rain by the end of the week.

Over the weekend, heavy downpours were experienced over parts of northeastern and northern Namibia, the Meteorological Service's office at Hosea Kutako International Airport reported yesterday.

The highest single rainfall figure to be reported since Friday came from Katima Mulilo in the northeast, where 73,5 millimetres of rain had fallen on Thursday.

At Grootfontein, where a major downpour of 103,5 mm that had fallen on Sunday was recorded on Monday morning last week, an additional 82,5 mm of rain has been measured since then.

More than half of this was recorded yesterday morning, when 46,5 mm was measured at the town.

Following the measurement of 73,5 mm recorded at Katima Mulilo on Friday morning, a further 67,2 mm of rain has been measured at the Caprivi Region capital, of which 39,7 mm was recorded yesterday morning and 27,5 mm on Saturday morning.

At Okongo in the Eenhana district in the Ohangwena Region, 65,7 mm of rain was recorded on Saturday morning, followed by an additional 17,1 mm recorded yesterday morning.

Showers measuring 59,7 mm had also been recorded at Okongo the previous Saturday morning.

Some 40 mm of rain was measured at Nkurenkuru in the western part of the Kavango Region on Saturday morning, a week after 65 mm of rain was measured there.

At Rundu, 17,7 mm was measured yesterday, while 8,3 mm was recorded at Ondangwa.

Karasburg in the Karas Region also received rain over the weekend.

Some 17 mm of rain was measured at the town yesterday morning, a week after 17,3 mm had been recorded at the town.

At Khorixas in the Kunene Region, where a major downpour measuring 76,6 mm was recorded on January 19, a further 19,3 mm of rain was measured yesterday.

At Otjikaru, a farm south of Waterberg, 23 mm of rain was recorded yesterday morning, the Weather Bureau further reported.

Widespread rains were recorded in other parts of the Otjozondjupa Region early last week as well, when 41 mm was measured in the Omatako Mountain area and 35,8 mm at Hochfeld on Tuesday.

At the same time, between 40 and 80 mm was measured at Judaea Ost, a farm near Hoachanas in the Hardap Region, the Meteorological Service reported.
