China to help pay for rail project

STAFF REPORTER

NAMIBIA and China signed a grant agreement in Windhoek on Friday detailing the N$1 billion grant promised by that country a year ago during a visit of the Chinese head of state to Namibia.

"The N$1 billion will be used for social projects like the agricultural Green Scheme and to complete the remaining section of the northern railway," said Helmut Angula, Director General of the National Planning Commission.

"The sum of N$700 million also granted will be used as concessional loans for State-owned agencies."

Another N$20 million will go to two rural schools at Tsumkwe and Omuthiya, where combined secondary schools exist.

They will be upgraded to full secondary schools until Grade 12 and equipped accordingly.

The Tsumkwe school is in a pitifully dilapidated state due to neglect.

"Part of the funds will also be used to support State hospitals," said Ren Xiaoping, the new Chinese Ambassador to Namibia.

"We also signed for the dispatch of a Chinese expert team to Namibia to conduct a feasibility study on the agricultural project of Ndonga Linea in the Kavango Region," Angula said.
