Ondangwa has a twin in Sweden

ABSALOM SHIGWEDHA at ONDANGWA

ONDANGWA has signed a twinning agreement with the municipality of Falkoeping in Sweden, aimed at developing the local economy.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday by Ondangwa Mayor Naftal Andimba and his Falkoeping counterpart, Ulf Eriksson.

The Falkoeping municipality agreed to help the Ondangwa Town Council improve solid waste management, sewerage systems, sanitation and economic development.

Andimba said he was excited about the prospects for co-operation.

"It also reminds me of the massive support rendered by Sweden to the people of Namibia during our liberation struggle," said Andimba.

"One of the great advantages we have is the availability of land," he said.

However, Andimba said servicing such land is a major challenge, while compensating people to pave the way for urban development is an expensive exercise as well.

"We have to have good internal and external relations with other municipalities where we can share knowledge and experiences and this is one is a step in the right direction."

Eriksson said his town's assistance to Ondangwa will be in the form of sharing knowledge and experience.

He said the town of Falkoeping had a number of companies involved in recycling and industrial production, which could help transfer these skills to Ondangwa.
