Keetmans plans to open an SPCA

KEETMANSHOOP - The maltreatment and gross neglect of animals, including pets, remains a serious problem in Namibia and there are very few safe havens for such animals.

The southern town of Keetmanshoop is one of the major towns in the country that do not have facilities where unwanted and maltreated animals can find refuge and a second chance at a happy life.

The town's former facility of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) closed shop many years ago for various reasons including a lack of funds.

However, an ardent animal lover at Keetmanshoop, Stoffel Smith, is spearheading efforts to reopen a branch of the SPCA at the town.

When approached by Nampa for comment, Smith said the SPCA could be up and running by February.

He strongly feels that every town in the country ought to have an SPCA branch.
