RDP gets under SPYL's skin, NBC rapped over coverage

STAFF REPORTER

THE Swapo Youth League has passed 'a vote of no confidence' in the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and called on Government to get rid of the broadcaster's management.

SPYL Secretary Elijah Ngurare claimed in a statement yesterday that both NBC radio and television were "hell bent" on sabotaging and frustrating Swapo supporters.

According to Ngurare, most people on the NBC management were supporters of the newly formed Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) and used the corporation's facilities to promote that party.

In doing so, they were carrying out what was written in the famous 'Nyamu notes', which led to the formation of the RDP, he said.

The 'Nyamu notes' refer to pieces of paper found in the office of former Trade Minister Jesaya Nyamu on which he stated that the supporters of former Minister Hidipo Hamutenya must either resign from Swapo or stay within while working towards the formation of a new party.

Nyamu was subsequently expelled from Swapo while Hamutenya resigned and they formed the RDP.

Ngurare said Swapo and the Government must "urgently rescue NBC from being turned into a mouthpiece of an unelected political party which seeks to derail the gains of Independence".

He said the NBC had not missed covering RDP rallies.

"The NBC has not done the same for UDF, MAG, CoD, RP or any other opposition party, nor has the NSHR defended other opposition political parties on the NBC platform in the same way it does for RDP," Ngurare charged.

According to the youth league, "programmed robots of the NSHR" - human rights activists - daily hurled insults and provocation against Swapo and the Government while allegedly enjoying free rein from the NBC.

"Persistent insults and vilification of the Swapo Party, its Government and leadership is tolerated by NBC management and no apology given to our leaders and party," Ngurare said.

He claimed that many in the NBC management were RDP members, supporters and sympathisers and have been attending RDP rallies.

"Some go as far as attending the Swapo Party activities and gatherings during the day while at night they join their secret RDP caucuses while others continue to hallucinate [about] a day when RDP takes over Government in Namibia.

In the fullness of time, the names of these officials will be made public," Ngurare said.

He said many RDP members were still hibernating in the offices, agencies and ministries of the "Swapo Party Government" while working for the RDP.

It was not clear whether Ngurare meant RDP members may not work for the Government.

Last year, the SPYL also passed a vote of no confidence in the Electoral Commission of Namibia after it did not tip off Swapo about the RDP's application for registration.
