Desperate schools pitch tents for classrooms

KAKUNAWE SHINANA

TENTS will be set up at certain schools in Windhoek from Monday to provide classroom space for hundreds of Grade 1 and 8 pupils who could not be enrolled at the start of the school year.

Two new secondary school buildings are also being built to meet the need for extra classrooms.

An unused room has been transformed into a Grade 1 classroom at the Eros Primary School, and afternoon sessions will be offered at the Michelle McLean Primary School.

New teachers have also been appointed and they are to begin teaching on Monday.

There will be no more registration or placements of pupils and all latecomers will have to find places on their own.

Out of 144 eleventh-graders seeking school placement in Windhoek, there was only enough space for 123, with the rest having to attend schools in other regions.

According to the Khomas Region's Director of Education, Claudia Tjikuua, the Ministry is experiencing difficulties in placing pupils in schools offering the subjects they took last year.

"Today is the last date for school placements and the Ministry will have to look to other regions like Omaheke, where we have identified available space, in order to accommodate most of these pupils," said Tjikuua.
