Missing magistrate holds up court case

LUQMAN CLOETE at KEETMANSHOOP

THE absence of Keetmanshoop Regional Magistrate Hosea Noabeb this week twice held up a diamond theft case involving three former employees of Namdeb.

The trial was supposed to start on Monday but was postponed until yesterday because of the Magistrate's absence.

Yesterday, the case against Colin Vries, Jason Iyambo and Seblon Vries was once again postponed until July.

It is alleged that the three stole nine rough diamonds weighing 18.93 carats from their employer, Namdeb, at Oranjemund in January 2005.

The value of the diamonds was estimated at N$84 574.

The Namibian was reliably informed that Regional Divisional Magistrate Alfred Siboleka on Monday ordered a staffer to go to Noabeb's home to look for him, but to no avail.

A visit to the State Hospital to find out whether Noabeb had been admitted for treatment there was also fruitless.

The Magistrate apparently did not notify anyone that he would be absent.

One of the 17 State witnesses, a diamond valuator, had to travel from South Africa to attend the court proceedings, which had been scheduled for three days on the court roll.

The Namibian was also informed that the suspects' Windhoek-based lawyers, who had booked three days' accommodation at Keetmanshoop, plan to lodge a complaint with the Magistrates Commission over Noabeb's unexplained absence.
