Food airlifted to stranded herders in Oshana Region

OSWALD SHIVUTE at OSHITUNTU

FOOD supplies have been airlifted to cattle herders in the flooded southern part of the Oshana Region, who have been cut off from the rest of the country for almost a month.

The supplies, dropped off by the herders' employers at Ondangwa, were delivered by an NDF helicopter on Friday and Saturday.

The helicopter made several trips to areas such as Oshituntu, Onoolongo, Ekango lyOmongwa, Okasheshetem Oponona, Omatale, Number 7, Ombuga and Oniizimba.

The Chief Regional Officer of Oshana, John Kandombo, and regional councillors Amutenya Ndaafa, Josef Mupetami, Ismael Uugwanga and Matheus Shigwedha assisted with the airlift.

Two nurses from the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital, Sisters Hanna Nambahu and Cesilia Elifas, also went along to treat any cattle herders who were sick.

The Oshana Police sent an officer to check on any criminal activities in the area.

"We thank the Government for this good gesture, and we are appealing to our Government not to stop here but to continue assisting us in this regard, because we were going hungry," said John Tileinge, one of the herders at Oshituntu.
