Crop failure feared in the North

ABSALOM SHIGWEDHA

FLOODS in northern Namibia have destroyed crops in the Omusati and Oshana regions, a meteorological observer has told The Namibian.

Jenny Kahere, who was part of a team that did a crop assessment in six regions, said many fields had been flooded just as seeds were about to germinate.

She said this has sparked concern over whether those affected will have any harvest this season.

She said the most hard hit regions were Omusati and Oshana.

The team visited Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena, Caprivi, Kavango and Oshikoto.

It was made up of officials from the Ministry of Works' Meteorological Division, the Office of the Prime Minister's Disaster Monitoring Division and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Kahere said a full report of their findings was being compiled.

Further destruction of crops in northern Namibia is likely to occur, as more floodwater is expected from southern Angola.

Weatherman Odillo Kgobetsi said more rain was expected in the northern, central and eastern parts over the next two to three days.
