Hardap sluices opened

LUQMAN CLOETE THE sluices of the Hardap Dam were opened on Saturday evening after continuous rains in its catchment area had increased the reservoir's level to 71,8 per cent .

The Mariental Town Council's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Nghiwilepo, yesterday said NamWater had ordered the release of water at a rate of 200 cubic metres per second on Saturday at 21h00.

Yesterday, the dam level was 69,8 per cent, with a water inflow of 100 cubic metres per second, Nghiwiplepo said.

Nghiwilepo said the sluices would stay open to release water into the Fish River until the dam level could be maintained under 70 per cent.

NamWater is keeping the dam level at 70 per cent to minimise the risk of flooding the nearby town of Mariental.
