Namibians heap praise on Castro

ABSALOM SHIGWEDHA

NAMIBIAN politicians yesterday praised Cuban leader Fidel Castro as a great leader and a champion of socialism who had led his country to great heights.

Castro permanently gave up power yesterday.

The leader of the newly formed Namibia People's Party (NPP), Ignatius Shixwameni, described Castro as a great leader.

"He has been a great revolutionary in our lifetime and has inspired many people in the world.

And he has been a personal inspiration to me in many ways," said Shixwameni, who studied in Cuba for five years.

Shixwameni said Castro had done a lot for Cuba, having sacrificed to fight for his people and unite them.

"He has taken Cuba to greater heights and Cuba is now one of the countries with the highest literacy rate and amongst the countries with the best health facilities," he said.

He said Castro was an exemplary leader, who had always been in the forefront in leading his people, without wavering, for more than 40 years.

The former Swapo member said he hoped that Castro's departure would not mark the end of his ideals.

DTA President Katuutire Kaura said that amidst threats from the US, Castro successfully implemented socialism in Cuba and made it survive for 48 years.

"He is one of those who has championed scientific socialism," said Kaura.

He said Castro had also made Cuba compete with highly developed countries in terms of health and education.

A CoD leader, Ben Ulenga, said he hoped for a smooth transfer of power in Cuba and that whoever took over from Castro would show solidarity with poor people like Castro did.

Cuba militarily helped Swapo's armed wing, the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan), during the liberation struggle and the two countries' good relations continued after Independence.

A Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association was formed, promoting and enhancing friendships between Namibians and Cubans.

The President of the Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association, veteran Swapo politician Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, could not be reached for comment.

Castro (81) ruled Cuba for five decades.
