Pupil assaults teacher in class

ADAM HARTMAN

TEACHERS are concerned about their safety following the alleged assault of a mathematics teacher by a Grade 9 pupil at the Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School at Swakopmund on Monday - especially since the boy seems to have got away scot-free.

Upon inquiry, reliable sources at the school told The Namibian that the incident took place during school time.

According to information, loud noises and shouting came from one of the classrooms.

The first thought was that the children were unruly in the absence of a teacher.

However, it turned out that a scuffle had allegedly broken out between a Grade 9 boy and his mathematics teacher, in which the boy allegedly slapped the teacher.

The boy was allegedly taken to the principal's office, after which his parents were called in.

The boy is back at school.

"Ever since Monday it seems there is a provoking attitude amongst the pupils," one teacher said yesterday.

"The kids seem to have noticed that nothing happened to the boy, and now they're becoming antagonistic."

The source said there was another confrontation yesterday after some children allegedly burst into a classroom to collect textbooks without permission.

"There needs to be discipline in situations like these.

An example has to be made, otherwise these kids will get away with murder, and there's no protection for the teachers," the source said.

The Namibian tried to get comment from the school principal, Tony Britz, but he was said to be at a workshop.

The father of the boy was also contacted, but there was no answer.
