NBC employees return to work

DENVER ISAACS

THINGS were back to normal at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) yesterday, when employees who had been on strike since Tuesday returned to work.

It followed an undertaking by the NBC management that it would honour a six per cent salary increase and a back payment of nine per cent.

Employees of the State-run broadcaster however made it clear that the strike had only been called off provisionally and if the money was not paid into their accounts by today, they would resume with their work stoppage.

Shop stewards council chairperson Kennedy Onesmus confirmed yesterday that a memorandum of suspension agreement had been signed between management, employees and acting Information Minister Nangolo Mbumba, as a witness, early yesterday morning.

Employees, who had been picketing on the NBC premises, were informed of the agreement, Onesmus said, and by 10h00, regular programming on NBC radio had resumed.

Regional offices were informed at around the same time, he said.

Workers, he added, were confident that management would not fail them today, and they had already verified that the process of payment was underway yesterday.

Workers countrywide went on strike on Tuesday, calling for a six per cent increase which they were promised last year, as well as a nine per cent back payment which had been outstanding since 2003.

The corporation agreed to meet these demands on Wednesday, but workers initially stated that they would only return to their posts after the money had been paid into their bank accounts.
