Dawids lost out narrowly to John Muinjo during the October 2006 elections for the Namibia Football Association (NFA) presidency. This time, Dawids will have a relatively easy path to the hot seat, since Van Wyk appears to be out of favour due to his failure to turn around the fortunes of the league. According to certain clubs, Van Wyk failed to source enough funding for the NPL to be self-sufficient, and also failed to turn the league into a professional entity. Dawids on his part will come into play with a historic league win by his club Orlando Pirates, which he now owns, while his idea to empower teams seems to have convinced some of the clubs in the league. Insiders indicated to The Namibian Sport this week that Dawids intends to move the NPL out of Soccer House and make it a stand-alone organisation run on business principles. He wants to intensify the ties with the current Namibia Football Consortium (NFC) in terms of sponsorship by proving that he can change the face of football if matters are conducted professionally. He is also said to be willing to negotiate other sponsorships on behalf of the league to give teams more start-up capital and market the game in general for more specators to come to matches. Dawids, who did not want to speak about his intentions to The Namibian Sport, said he would reveal his business plan for the NPL at the annual general meeting on Saturday. Both candidates for the position are expected to make presentations to the clubs on why - and how - they want to run the association. Dawids was nominated by Tigers and Black Africa for the chairmanship, while Van Wyk was nominated by Ramblers and Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW). |
