Cycle Classic set for Oct 12

CORRY IHUHUA

THE ninth Namibian Model Pick 'n Pay Cycle Classic, the country's premier cycling event, was formally launched in Windhoek recently.

This annual highlight of the local cycling calendar, which takes place on October 12 this year, is organised by the Windhoek Rotary Club and Windhoek Pedal Power and serves as a the only pre-qualifying race outside South Africa for the premier Argus Cycle Tour in Cape Town.

The local Cycle Classic offers an additional, brand new 20-kilometre route for all 2008 entries.

In previous events, only three distances were catered for.

Now there will be routes of 20 km, 30 km, 65 km and 100 km.

The new 20-km route will give the not-so serious contenders a chance to finish the race in reasonable times, while the tough 65 and 100 km routes are meant for serious riders who will compete for top honours.

All cyclists who complete the race will receive medals if they are within the cut-off times set by the organisers.

Parents of future cycling giants should also keep the Kiddies Classic in mind on Saturday, October 11.

The children's race offers children a chance to go out and enjoy their day under the supervision of their parents.

The children will register for only N$15 on October 11 between 12h00 and 14h30.

Schools with the most entries on a pro-rata basis can win prizes of N$5 000, N$3 000 and N$2 000.

All the funds raised by the Windhoek Rotary Club are used for community projects all over Namibia.

Entry forms are available at Cycle Wholesale, Cycletec, Cymot, Cycology Cycle, The Namibian and at all Model Pick 'n Pay shops.

A limited number of T-shirts are available for early entries on October 11 at the United Sports Grounds between 12h00 and 15h00.

Entry numbers can also be collected on the day.
