CAF defers Zam/Nam encounter

THE Under-17 African Junior championship first-round, first-leg qualifier against Namibia that was scheduled for this weekend has been postponed.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is still awaiting a response from Fifa on the senior team's 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup qualifier against Togo.

FAZ communications officer Erick Mwanza said in an interview yesterday that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) agreed to the national soccer mother body's request to postpone the match.

FAZ last week wrote to CAF requesting the postponement of the match due to the country's national mourning following the death of Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa.

Mwanza said the team would continue training and the association would keep liaising with CAF and the Namibian Football Association (NFA) over the new date for the game.

"We got confirmation from CAF that the match should be put off this weekend.

CAF accepted our request that the match be postponed but we are yet to get the new date for the game.

We will continue to consult both CAF and the NFA on the new date.

As at now, the team will continue training as we wait for the new date," he said.

And Mwanza said FAZ had delayed the departure of the Under-20 squad that was scheduled to leave for Australia yesterday to a later date.

Mwanza said details of when the team would leave would be communicated later but that the junior Chipolopolo would continue training while waiting for their departure.

"The Under-20 squad was supposed to leave yesterday but the situation can't allow.

We don't know yet when exactly they will leave but details would be communicated later," he said.

On the senior team, Mwanza said the world soccer governing body, Fifa, is yet to respond to FAZ's request for the possible postponement of the crucial joint African and World Cup qualifier against Togo set for September 6.

"For the September 6 match, we are still awaiting Fifa's response.

We are hopeful of getting a response before the end of the week," Mwanza said.
