Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - Web posted at 10:45:34 AM GMT Hockey victorious in Botswana NAMIBIAN hockey teams took four of the seven trophies up for grabs during the annual SADC Hockey Tournament between Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana recently. |
|
The tournament was held in Gaborone, Botswana. Zimbabwe won the other three trophies. At the tournament, Namibia were the overall winners for under-13 boys, under-13 girls, under-16 girls and for under-18 girls. Zimbabwe took the under-16 and under-18 boys' titles. Zimbabwe also took the overall crown for men at the event. The annual tournament started with the senior men's teams of Namibia and Botswana in 1997 has developed tremendously since then, gaining recognition from the African Hockey and International Hockey federations. Talks are underway for Malawi and the Seychelles to join this developmental tournament. The main aim of the tournament is to develop the game of hockey in the SADC region and to expose more players to stiffer and regular competition. With the African Cup of Nations in June / July 2009 in Ghana, the 2010 Indoor African Cup of Nations in Namibia and the 2011 All-African Games in Zambia, this tournament will create a platform for junior players coming through the ranks to represent Namibia at these world-class events. If Zambia, who is not currently playing hockey, cannot host the 2011 All-Africa Games hockey competition, Namibia will have the first option to host it, provided that it constructs an artificial turf by 2011. This will mean a lot for sport in Namibia and more international competitions will come Namibia's way. Countries like Canada, India, England and Russia have shown keen interest in playing against Namibia, but with no Astro-turf, this will remain a dream. |
