Ohangwena to host street soccer

THE sport and health programme sponsored by the Johnson & Johnson Company, under the auspices of Namibia Street Soccer, will host its first-ever regional tournament in the Ohangwena Region this weekend.

The co-ordinator of Namibia Street Soccer, George Ekandjo, said the tournament is slated for Saturday at Ondobe Community Sport field of Ondobe Constituency in the region.

According to Ekandjo, the tournament kicks off at 09h00 and 1 500 street-soccer participants from all over the region as well as some 21 special guests will feature in Saturday's tournament.

"Namibia Street Soccer is a sport and health programme aiming at equipping young people with experience in life skills and HIV-AIDS awareness," he said.

He added that the Namibia Street Soccer programme creates sport clubs for the youth, brings youngsters together through sport activities and engages them in behavioural change pertaining to HIV-AIDS.

The Namibia Street Soccer programme has so far established 11 soccer clubs in the region with 22 street-soccer coaches and 1 357 players.

The Street Soccer programme started in the Ohangwena Region last year.
