Alpha not happy with athletes at Olympics

WINDHOEK - Athletics Namibia (AN) president Alpha Kangueehi has expressed disappointment with the Namibian athletes' performance at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Namibian athletes Stephan Louw, Beata Naigambo and Hilaria Johannes all failed to bring home a medal in the long jump and marathon.

Agnes Samaria also failed to secure a place in the 800m finals.

Kangueehi put the blame squarely on the Namibia National Olympics Committee (NNOC) for releasing funds for the athletes' training very late, and for the NNOC's failure to organise a training camp for the athletes in time.

"We suggested to the NNOC to have a training camp in Malaysia, as there were special rates for Olympics teams in that country but that fell on deaf ears," he said.

Kangueehi asked what the logic was of having athletes travel to Beijing six days before the start of the Olympic Games, referring to Naigambo and Johannes.

He said there was no time for athletes to acclimatise.

Kangueehi also questioned the high number of officials attending the Olympic Games, as they do not deal directly with the athletes, calling this a waste of financial resources.

The NNOC gave individual financial assistance to all the athletes for preparations, but Kangueehi argues that a training camp for all athletes should have been the priority.

Kangueehi said instead of athletes having been given money for their individual preparations, they should have been encouraged to clinch medals and be paid according to medals won at the Olympic Games, but no such agreement was reached.

He feels that the focus should now be turned to the Berlin World Championships in 2009, All-Africa Games in Zambia in 2011 and the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

"In the future, instead of relying on organisations like the NNOC, we will now involve the private sector and the Ministry of Youth and Sport to ensure proper preparations for our athletes," he stressed.
