Cameroon hails golden girl Mbango

YAOUNDE - Cameroon yesterday hailed Francoise Mbango the day after she defended her triple jump gold at the Olympics.

Mbango, 32, jumped a best of 15.39 metres, a new Olympic record.

"Olympic Gold: Mbango has done it again!" headlined the Cameroon Tribune.

"Yesterday was Cameroon's day of glory at the Beijing Olympic Games.

The green-red-yellow flag was paraded around the capacity full Beijing Olympic stadium by the nation's golden girl."

Mbango held the title she won in Athens after giving birth in 2006.

The daily Le Jour said that Mbango "becomes a legend being the first woman to win an Olympic gold in triple jump twice".

The newspaper added: "For the first time since the Olympic Games opened in Beijing, the national anthem of Cameroon rang out in China."

Prime Minister Inoni Ephraim told the Cameroon Tribune: "I'm proud of this performance by Francoise Mbango.

Her victory is a source of great motivation and pride for all Cameroonians.

Cameroon is now among the countries who have achieved a gold medal during these Olympic Games, it's no mean feat."
