Uutoni claims cheating

BEIJING - Namibian light-flyweight boxer Japhet Uutoni was blatantly robbed of a place in the next round of the competition after he drew 5-all with Polish boxer Lukasz Maszcyk on Saturday.

The judges controversially awarded Maszcyk the fight after deliberating on it for some time.

Even the Polish boxer was surprised to learn he had won.

However, it was clear that the Namibian was by far the better boxer and threw more punches than his opponent, who hit beneath the belt several times but the referee warned him only once.

It was a close fight, but Uutoni lead the scoreboard all the time.

A disappointed Uutoni told Nampa after the fight that the judging was "absolutely not fair".

His coaches, Kennedy Muatara and Mistake Gariseb, concurred, saying it was proven once again that it is not easy for African boxers to win in Beijing.

Muatara said his boxer gave his best, and he was proud of Uutoni who followed instructions very well.

Approached for comment, Namibia's General Team Manager Bernard Kaanjuka said they wanted to appeal the decision but were told by the Tournament Director that they cannot appeal the judges' decision, only unfair actions by the referee.
