Jacobs corruption probe not yet finished

LUQMAN CLOETE

THE Karas Regional Council's Chief Regional Officer, Salmaan Jacobs, who faces corruption charges, made another brief appearance in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Jacobs is accused of defrauding the Karas Regional Council of close to N$32 000 after he allegedly claimed N$49 020 in extra expenses for attending a month-long, all-expenses-paid workshop towards the end of 2006.

During yesterday's court appearance, Jacobs asked Magistrate Philanda Blockstein-Christiaan to provisionally withdraw the case until the Police investigation is finalised.

Jacobs argued that the case has now dragged on for a year without the Police investigation being finalised.

The Magistrate rejected Jacob's request, noting that the Police were still waiting for foreign affidavits to complete their investigation.

"Corruption cases are complicated, therefore at times it take long before Police investigations are completed," she remarked.

She set November 24 as the final date for Jacobs to return to court.

Jacobs remains free on bail of N$7 000.

The Namibian has established that the Prosecutor General still has to decide whether Jacobs should be prosecuted or not once the Police investigation is completed.

Recently the Karas Regional Council notified Jacobs that it would not renewed his contract, which expires at the end of October.
