"At times, my Ministry receives complaints from some conservancies of individuals and even conservancy committee members misusing and misappropriating conservancy property and finances at the expense of the conservancy members," she said. She warned that action would be taken against such people. Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed that a conservancy was not a tool to divide community members along political, racial or ethnic lines but a vehicle towards rural economic emancipation. She said the Caprivi Region was blessed with an abundance of plants and animals, wetlands, beautiful landscapes and diverse cultures, which the local communities could benefit from. She said the concept of conservancies would continue to grow, as many communities were interested and the Ministry was inundated with new applications for registration. There are now 52 communal conservancies in Namibia which are home to more than 220 000 people. Some have become independent from donor funding and pay their members dividends every year. "Others are a bit slow to become financially independent and in the near future, I want to see Sobbe Conservancy following the same route and that the conservancy is well developed and self-sustaining," the Minister said. The Sobbe conservancy is located in a wildlife corridor neighbouring the Mudumu and Bwabwata National Parks. |
