By-election date announced

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

RESIDENTS of the Tobias Hainyeko constituency in Katutura will go to the polling stations on October 31.

The regional councillor's position became vacant after Swapo "excommunicated" party veteran Erasmus 'Kaptein' Hendjala.

Director of Elections, Moses Ndjarakana, said supplementary registration of voters in the constituency will be conducted from September 1 to 5, with parties given time between September 13 and 29 to nominate their candidates.

The Tobias Hainyeko constituency came into being five years ago when the Delimitation Commission recommended that the Hakahana constituency be split into two, with the eastern part called Tobias Hainyeko constituency and the other part Moses //Garoëb constituency.

Hendjala was expelled from the ruling party after allegations were levelled that he had joined the opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) and was working against Swapo from within.

Hendjala denied the allegations, providing counter information but got the boot anyway - allegedly without a proper hearing.
