Four men caught with 'uranium'

ADAM HARTMAN

FOUR men were arrested at Gobabis last week for being in possession of four containers containing what is suspected to be uranium oxide, Police sources told The Namibian on Monday.

Charles Kamahulu, Hosean Menasse, Martin Karengee and Lembeus Jacob appeared in the Gobabis Magistrate's Court on charges of illegal dealing in and possession of minerals with a high value, and were released on bail of N$10 000 each.

According the sources, they were arrested in the centre of Gobabis in broad daylight.

Police seized an estimated two to three kg of a mineral believed to be uranium oxide and an estimated one to two litres of material believed to be 'yellowcake' uranium.

"We are still investigating where the content was smuggled from," the source said.

Roessing Uranium's Manager of External Affairs, Jerome Mutumba, confirmed to The Namibian that the Police had informed the mine of the incident on Friday.

He said two representatives of the mine travelled to Gobabis on Saturday to offer specialist assistance to the Police.

"Nampol indicated that would make the material available to them for testing, in a bid to determine whether the material is indeed uranium, and to determine the origin of the material," he said.
