Swapo uses Govt platform

OSWALD SHIVUTE at OMUTHIYA

PRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba raised eyebrows when he used the inauguration of the new Oshikoto Regional Council headquarters at Omuthiya on Tuesday to campaign for Swapo in the upcoming local authority election at the town.

Omuthiya, which will be developed into the regional capital of Oshikoto, will elect its first Town Council on September 26.

During the opening of the building, Swapo Secretary of Information and Publicity Jerry Ekandjo called the local Swapo co-ordinator, Armas Amukwiyu, to come forward and introduce the party's seven candidates for the election.

President Pohamba then said: "You must elect these people Amukwiyu has introduced to you, because they are the right people to serve you.

Elect wisely for the right people, who will develop your town of Omuthiya and who will take care of you," President Pohamba said.

In his opening speech, the President listed a number of Government development projects in the region, such as new pipelines, roads, schools, clinics and hospitals, agricultural extension offices and the Tsumeb-Oshikango Northern Railway Extension - which he described as examples of the Swapo-led Government's resolve to bring social and economic development to all parts of Namibia.
