Border posts need facelift: Governor

LUQMAN CLOETE

THE Karas Governor, Dawid Boois, is calling for a facelift of buildings at southern border posts ahead of the 2010 soccer World Cup to be staged in South Africa.

Boois said the border post buildings are in a poor state and must be renovated to attract more tourists after 2010 World Cup.

"The proverb is that the first impression is lasting, therefore we need swift action to address the poor state of Government buildings, especially at the entry points," he said.

Boois made this call at a meeting the Minister of Works and Transport, Helmut Angula, had with local and regional councillors at Keetmanshoop yesterday.

Boois also expressed concern over the poor service tourists experienced at border posts.

He said some tourists had complained to him about poor treatment at border posts.

Boois added that toilets at border posts were in a deplorable condition.

Angula said he would recommend a joint meeting with all relevant ministries to discuss the matter.

Commenting on concerns raised about dilapidated Government buildings in general, the Director of Maintenance in the Ministry, Ben Booysen, said scarcity of money prevented the Ministry from revamping buildings.

He said the alienation scheme introduced in 1998 was also aimed at reducing the cost of maintaining Government houses.

According to Booysen, 21 Government houses at Keetmanshoop have been sold under the alienation scheme.
