Local councillors get pay rise

LOCAL AUTHORITY councillors countrywide are to receive a 15 per cent increase in their sitting allowances on September 1.

This was announced by the Ministry of Local and Regional Government in a circular dated July 22.

Mayors' monthly allowances go up to N$4 025 from N$3 500, while their deputies, who were receiving N$3 200 a month, will now earn N$3 680.

Management committee chairmen will get an allowance of N$3 795, up from N$3 300, while other management committee members, who were getting N$3 200, will now get N$3 680.

Ordinary councillors' allowances will go up from N$3 000 to N$3 450.

All mayors, deputy mayors and management committee chairmen will receive higher cellphone allowances too.

Mayors will receive N$500 a month (up from N$400), deputy mayors N$250 (previously N$200) and management committee chairmen N$375 (previously N$300).

Councillors' entertainment allowances have been increased from N$2 000 a year to N$3 000.
