Community mourns murdered child

DENVER ISAACS

COMMUNITY members and relatives of the late Adriana Jacobs, the four-year-old girl whose mutilated and decomposed body was discovered in a Windhoek riverbed earlier this month, yesterday marched through the streets of Katutura in protest against the actions that had led to her death.

Jacobs will be laid to rest from her family home in Katutura today, nine days after she was found on the banks of the Gammams River in the Grysblok residential area last Tuesday.

At the time, her family was offering a N$5 000 reward for information on her whereabouts, after she disappeared from a neighbour's house on June 30.

Police are yet to report any progress on their investigation into her murder.

Demonstrators yesterday marched from the Soweto Market near the Jacobs home to the site where the girl's body was discovered, mourning and singing throughout.

"We are feeling unsafe.

It is not even safe to leave our children playing in the backyard anymore.

We are tired of our brothers and sisters acting like this," said one of the marchers, Eskon Ambambi.

Ambambi, on behalf of the group, delivered a petition calling for prompt action from the Police and Government to the councillor for the Soweto Constituency, Rachel Jacobs.

Jacobs, who likewise condemned the actions of those responsible for the child's death, called on the community to help the Police find the culprits.

A similar call was made last week by Health Minister Richard Kamwi in his position as acting Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare.

Kamwi called for a stiff sentence to be imposed on Jacobs's killer(s) once they are captured.
