Minibus drivers take over car washers spot in city centre

DENVER ISAACS

THE City Police yesterday moved minibus drivers operating between Windhoek and Rehoboth from their original pick-up point opposite the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek.

The move has upset car washers who used to operate in the open space where the buses now pick up passengers.

The minibus drivers, members of the Rehoboth Bus and Taxi Association (Repta), have now taken over the shaded stalls formerly used by some of the more than 50 car washers along Hosea Kutako Drive.

The car washers have been ordered to move to an open space next to the stalls.

The car washers yesterday complained that they now have less space, no shade and no seating for their customers.

But while the bus drivers say they sympathise with their long-time neighbours, they're just as much being pushed by a decision coming from the local authority.

"This [new spot] was originally meant to be the rank.

It was built for that reason.

But for some reason, maybe because it was easier for customers, we ended up using that side of the road.

"But the municipality informed us [of the move] a while ago, and today they acted, so this is what it's going to be," said one driver, who did not want to give his name.

No comment on the decision could be obtained from the Windhoek Municipality yesterday.

However, an unidentified traffic officer told The Namibian that the space the bus drivers had used up to now has been bought and building will start there soon.
