Blackouts hit northern Namibia

OSWALD SHIVUTE

WIDESPREAD power outages were experienced in the northern parts of Namibia yesterday morning.

According to NamPower, the blackouts were caused by a technical problem at the Omburu substation near Omaruru.

The affected areas were Otjiwarongo, Outjo, Kamanjab, Khorixas, Platveld, Ombika, Paresis, Tsumeb, Grootfontein, Kombat, Mannheim, Ondangwa, Oshakati, Ongwediva and Rundu.

According to NamPower spokesman John Kaimu, a current transformer blew up on the Omburu-Gerus feeder at the Omburu substation.

Power was restored later yesterday, he said.

"NamPower wishes to apologise to its customers and the public in general for any inconvenience caused during this time."
