Govt 'forgot' about SA bursaries

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE Namibian Government was recently left red-faced after South Africa revealed that an offer of 100 bursaries to study at that country's universities had been ignored for more than a year.

During official talks between the delegations of President Hifikepunye Pohamba and Thabo Mbeki, it emerged that Namibia had not taken up an offer by South Africa for 100 free bursaries to study at South African universities.

Well-placed sources said Namibia had actually forgotten about the bursaries and that the SA delegation was not pleased with the situation.

"The issue of students to be trained and offered scholarships at South African universities was brought up during the recent visit of President Thabo Mbeki," Ester Paulus, public relations officer at the Ministry of Education, confirmed .

"It has been referred and soon both ministries of education will set up a date to discuss the matter," she said.

The Namibian approached the Ministry of Education to confirm whether it was true that the offer was actually made a year ago.
