Namibia donates cattle to Angola

OSHIKANGO - Namibian officials from the Directorate of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF) donated cattle to their Angolan counterparts and military officials at Oshikango's Santa Clara this week.

The three Afrikaner cattle (a bull and two heifers) were originally donated by President Hifikepunye Pohamba to his Angolan counterpart, Eduardo Dos Santos, during the latter's state visit to Namibia last year.

Namibian officials trucked in the three cattle from Omatjene Research Station near Otjiwarongo for the handover that took place on Angolan soil at the Santa Clara centre next to the entry point of the Oshikango Namibia-Angola border.

Namibian Ambassador to Angola Lineekela Mboti officiated at the ceremony, which was attended by a number of senior Angolan military officials and two veterinarians from that country.

But the handing over of the cattle was not an easy task for the Namibian officials as they completed it only after a long delay of at least three hours.

The hand over was supposed to take place at 11h00, but due to prolonged delays, it took place at 14h00 following a struggle by the Namibian officials to have the cattle properly documented before crossing the border into Angola.

Angolan officials, after the exchanging of the cattle from the Namibian truck to the Angola truck, were to transport the cattle to Luanda, some 2000km from Oshikango.

Sheehamandje Ipinge, Jacques Ells, Isaskar Mate, Jephta Ngavetene and Fredrick Nashidengo were the Namibian officials of the MAWF who handed over the cattle.
