Friday, August 29, 2008 - Web posted at 9:46:39 AM GMT Propagation Of War Is A Crime IT was Saturday, August 23 2008, that I attended a Swapo Party rally that took place at Okakwa Village in Ohangwena Region. |
|
The rally was widely announced by Ohangwena Region Governor, Usko Nghaamwa, that it was going to be a "star rally" to be a addressed by Elijah Ngurare, Secretary for Swapo Party Youth League, SPYL, as a "guest speaker". I could not believe my own eyes and ears when Governor Nghaamwa started the meeting. It has become a culture in Swapo Party that at every public gathering, they have a perceived or real opponent whom they will attack, insult and declare an enemy. It was then not surprising when Nghaamwa started to verbally dehumanise Sem Hamunyela, a local teacher and a Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) activist. The Governor declared Hamunyela a "mad person" who frequents the talk shows disrespecting the elders through his contributions. It seems that people like Nghaamwa are prepared to destroy their own families and relatives because of political differences. Nghaamwa never went into exile to fight for the liberation struggle of this country. He was a rich businessman during the apartheid regime, with his business chain known as Oshinanena. The fact that he became a Swapo leader should have been a good lesson to him that political tolerance is the way to go. Those of us who have a respect for the cultural values, norms and beliefs are forced to sympathise with our good friend, Hamunyela, being verbally abused by his uncle in public. At the same time Nghaamwa instructed the Swapo Party supporters not to buy from bricks which are made from Kondja Nghihalwa's project (business). One is left with no words that can express the attitude and actions of the Governor. He has opted to sacrifice his official duty and become a puppet of the Swapo Party. Worse still, I don't believe that it is Swapo Party's agenda to promote hatred and sabotage the local businesses that are contributing to the regional economy. As a keynote speaker, Ngurare gave us the shock of our lives when he claimed that he had heard that "there are young people who are receiving a training in some parts of Ohangwena Region in order to prepare them to sabotage the Swapo Government". The only training we have heard of in Ohangwena Region was announced the NBC's radio morning programme, 'Lunganda', by the very same Governor Nghaamwa and his councillors in which they called all the young people between 18 and 35 to apply for recruitment in order to receive a military training to become Police officers and Namibia Defence Force members after six months of training. Is that the training or military training referred to by Ngurare? Governor Nghaamwa seems to have betrayed the residents of the region he is entrusted to lead. He always announces all the events and activities taking place in the region but why was this incident announced by a "visitor"? Were the Police in the region informed before it was made a blame game of politicians? Was President Hifikepunye Pohamba briefed on the matter or will he only come to hear it from Ngurare on NBC news? When can Swapo Party structures and programmes be followed then? Issues of security threats or government sabotage are not for ordinary people's consumption in the way in which Ngurare has done it. He must be seriously and strongly reprimanded. We need an investigation on this claim and if it is unfounded, Ngurare must account for it. Ndapandula Shapopyongholwe Ohangwena Region |
