SMSes of the Day : Tuesday

* NAMIBIA, don't allow the Chinese arms to be offloaded at the Walvis Bay harbour! Stand firm!

* NBC show us Namibian women who have progressed in farming big time. Why do I have to see this motivational piece of Clara Bohitile's farming entrepreneurship on Canal France International?

* THE recent elections in Paraguay, where the government changed after 60 years, are a lesson for us Africans. The vote was won by the 'Bishop for the poor'. The are three lessons to be learned here - once ruling does not mean always ruling, the poor should be listened to and, most importantly, defeat should be accepted and power handed over peacefully.

Food for thought

* MR Peter Nevongo of Nawpu, we the nurses want our freedom. Please let us go for a referendum between your union and Nanu for us to decide. Do not be a Robert Mugabe in the lives of the nurses! We want Nanu to represent us and not your union.

* IT amazes me how many GRN cars are on the road on Sundays. One wonders how many of these are on GRN business? Tell me why the taxpayer should keep footing the bill for such a useless entity as the ACC.

* THE Government should not waste money on trying the improve performance in the civil service through setting up an Institute of Public Administration. Rather give give that N$24,2 million to them as an increment and you will see improved public service performance. We need motivation.

Politics in general

* THE so-called belated Independence celebration is nothing other than the start of the Swapo campaign for next year's election, as launched by Jerry Ekandjo a few weeks ago. This belated Independence is used by Swapo as a pretext to use Government resources to run party-political campaigns. Why would the main speaker wear party colours at a national event such as an Independence celebration? If it was not a political rally, why would everyone come in party colours and flags? This is pure corruption and ACC needs to act. - Amon Ngavetene

* WHAT is so special about Tjiriange receiving death threats that the Prime Minister must speak in his defence, saying the Government will leave no stone unturned finding the responsible individuals, as if he was the first person to receive death threats in this country? What about Hidipo Hamutenya and Phil ya Nangoloh who also received similar threats?

* NAMIBIANS must learn to listen, hear and understand things, and not vice versa. NSHR is a human rights organisation and Phil ya Nangoloh or other human rights activists are individuals in a company. Even a politically illiterate knows that employees of human rights watchdog belong to political parties of their choice. It is implied that they are all biased in favour of RDP. Is NSHR biased for warning those Swapo Party leaders who attack, insult and instigate hate speech and violent acts against RDP supporters? Have you heard RDP leaders calling their opponents "ghosts, dogs without tails, whirlwinds, enemies of the nation, Judas Iscariot, misled, botsotsos, etc? Let them give RDP State power to see if it will be spared on any act of wrongdoing.

* IT'S always nice listening to our MPs talking about issues of national concern. But, my question has always been the same, how many of those nice words are turned into action? As always, action speaks louder than words. - Hafeni Dongwi

* IT is time we have to learn that history should be taught to the younger generation, but this should not be done with any dubious intentions. Leaders should instead correct every wrong idea and system set up previously to benefit a small group of people in this country. - Netto

* MINISTER Nicky Iyambo must be applauded for raising concerns about crime and overcrowded cells. Unfortunately, the Swapo Party's mandate expires in 2009, sir!

* MINISTER Albert Kawana, I never knew one has to appreciate freedom by spending billions on a State House. Can't the leaders see that the people are in need?

* THE Government spends millions on State House and the funding of political parties, while school children attend classes in tents. The Government could build schools instead of such an expensive State House.

* THIS thing of 'Founding Father this and that' while 38 per cent of our people live below the poverty line is unacceptable. Uncle Nujoma's extravagance at the public expense is sucking this country dry. It is an anti-poor project.

* IT is clear that those returning to Swapo from the RDP were tasked to infiltrate the new party. Now that they have failed in their mission Swapo is recalling them. - Andy

Zim impasse

* YOUR Excellency, Chippo Zidonga, Zimbabwean ambassador to Namibia, your recent utterance on NBC TV has removed your remaining diplomatic credibility. How can you claim that Zanu-PF has competed with the Britons and Americans in elections? Are you aware that you are a caretaker diplomat after the Zimbabwean electorate spoke on March 29? Why don't you book a one-way ticket, pack and go home to tell Mugabe to accept the defeat and step down? There is life after the presidency or a diplomatic mission!

* WHILE the whole world is objecting against the violent abuse of the poor Zimbabwean people's rights by the Mugabe regime, who refuses to step down, our Government and Thabo Mbeki are quietly looking on. The Zimbabwean people are already being killed and more bloodshed is to come. They should be held equally accountable with Mugabe for the atrocities committed and going to be committed.

* HISTORY will judge Thabo Mbeki harshly as someone who has let down the people of Zimbabwe.

From the regions

* WE, the residents of Mangetti in the Kahenge constituency are in dire need of cellphone network coverage and improved radio coverage. We are always forced to travel 60 km to make or receive cellphone calls. Please help us enjoy our deserved piece of national cake. - Mwanyengwa

* IS the suspended Karibib CEO, Lydia Kandetu, under house arrest? Who suspended her without consulting with the Ministry? Mayor Mukonda, don't try to run this country on Swapo Party directives. How can you suspend a person without charges? That is arbitrary suspension. President Pohamba, the rule of law must be respected and upheld in this country!

General

* WHY is it that parastatals and Government ministries spend so much money on adverts or grieving the death of ministers or other public figureheads? Surely these funds can be put to better use?

* GAMBLING is the fastest growing habit and addiction in Namibia, which many impoverished Namibians take to in the hope of getting rich. So Government cannot always be blamed for all the poverty facing the nation today, as it does not encourage people to gamble. - AK Ekandjo

* I AM a bit concerned about how the Namibian music industry works. Why don't they feature Impactus 4 on NBC's Afro Connection? What criteria do they have to meet so that they can feature on our popular music show? I attended their music show last week and weekend and boy they did not disappoint and I am looking forward for another show. The other thing that I learnt from them is that family is something that is so precious and the respect that they showed us the spectators moved me to tears. Thanks Impactus 4 we love u and Yola!
