High-level powwow on City power tariffs

BRIGITTE WEIDLICH

THE Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Mines and Energy will meet with the Electricity Control Board (ECB) on Monday to discuss the overpriced electricity tariffs most Windhoek businesses and residents have been paying since July.

While the Windhoek Municipality maintains that its increase of over 10 per cent was justified, the ECB publicly stated that consumers were overcharged.

Representatives of the Ministry of Regional and Local Government will also attend the meeting on Monday, The Namibian has reliably learnt.

Discussions were originally scheduled to take place without officials from the City of Windhoek, but they will now attend, a Ministry source confirmed yesterday.

"The Chief Executive Officer and other strategic executives of Windhoek will have to explain why they overcharged consumers in the last three months and how they will reimburse them," the official told this newspaper.
