NUNW Secretary General Evilastus Kaaronda told the Namibia Food and Allied Workers Union (Nafau) congress at Gobabis that several parastatals were "failing or falling apart", yet Government was reluctant to clean up. "Many have the potential but their contribution to the GDP is insignificant at this stage. We want to know from the Government why they are quiet when such institutions do dismally," Kaaronda told The Namibian in an interview yesterday. He specifically referred to the Central Governance Agency and TransNamib Holdings. "Government has pumped millions into the Central Governance Agency but what have they achieved so far? Things are as bad as it was even before that agency came into being," Kaaronda said. The Central Governance Agency (CGA) was established to promote efficiency, transparency, competitiveness and productivity at State-owned companies to stop the bleeding of Government resources. It was also expected to do performance evaluations every year and review the investment plans and annual budgets of SOEs. The idea was for the SOEs to pay dividends to the Government and that the money generated be used to finance development in other sectors. Kaaronda said the CGA was far from what it was established to do. Kaaronda said the NUNW had had enough of parastatals and their managements who were just out to squander Government funds. |
