Pohamba back from Congo

WINDHOEK - President Hifikepunye Pohamba has reaffirmed Namibia's wish to strengthen ties between Namibia and Congo-Brazzaville.

A joint communique issued after Pohamba's three-day visit to the central African country said the Namibian Head of State held talks with his Congolese counterpart, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, in which the two presidents underscored the importance of strengthening co-operation in energy, mining, fisheries, agriculture, water, trade and investment, education and culture.

The two leaders signed four agreements: on mining and geology, fisheries and aquaculture, political consultations between their ministries of foreign affairs, trade and air services.

Pohamba addressed a joint session of Congolese Parliament where he highlighted the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between the Congolese and Namibian peoples.

Pohamba invited Sassou-Nguesso to visit Namibia and the Congolese President accepted the invitation.

The date for the visit will be set later.

Minister of Mines and Energy Erkki Nghimtina and Deputy Trade Minister Bernard Esau accompanied Pohamba to Congo.
