Broken bottle used to gouge at eyes of young woman

STAFF REPORTER

A 20-year-old woman from Gobabis has been left scarred and possibly blinded for life after a horrific attack in which an 18-year-old man allegedly used a broken bottle to stab her in the face.

The man accused of carrying out the attack, Conrad Kharigub, remains in Police custody after he appeared before Magistrate Johannes Shuuveni in the Gobabis Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder and rape on Wednesday.

His alleged victim is still being treated in hospital.

It is suspected that she was attacked between 01h00 and 06h00 on Sunday last weekend, a Police spokesperson, Sergeant Stephan Nuuyi, said yesterday.

It is thought that she was asaulted with a broken bottle while on her way home after she had visited a club at Gobabis.

She was partly undressed when she was found in a seriously injured state early on Sunday morning, leading to suspicions that she might have been raped.

According to Nuuyi, the injuries that she suffered in the stabbing were centred on her eyes.

She had also been stabbed in her mouth, with her tongue having been cut in the attack.

Kharigub remains in custody at the request of the State, which was represented by Public Prosecutor Conchita Olivier at Wednesday's court appearance.

Also at the request of the State, Magistrate Shuuveni has postponed Kharigub's case to November 21 for further investigations.
