NDF to stay in Liberia until '09

BRIGITTE WEIDLICH

THE United Nations has requested Namibia to continue participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia for another three years until 2009, Defence Minister Charles Namoloh has announced.

Delivering a statement in the National Assembly on Thursday, Namoloh told the House that the NDF had kept a contingent of one battalion in Liberia since 2004, with the soldiers rotated every six months.

"The fourth Namibian contingent, which ended its duty in Liberia last month under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Moses Shapawanale, received the 'best conduct' award," Namoloh told the House.

He said the UN had reimbursed Namibia N$189,3 million for the peacekeeping mission for the period between January 2004 and March this year.
