Monday, March 27, 2006 - Web posted at 7:13:00 GMT SA may build second nuclear power plant JOHANNESBURG - South Africa is studying a plan to build another nuclear power station in Western Cape Province to address electricity shortages. |
|
The southern parts of South Africa have been plagued by power outages since late last year, when one of the Koeberg nuclear plant's two generators was damaged. Koeberg, the country's only nuclear facility, normally supplies about half the Western Cape's power. "We're busy with a feasibility study to look at the possibility of building a second nuclear power station at Koeberg," Gaynor Kast, a spokeswoman for Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin, said. - Bloomberg |
