Cops foil cash heist

* TANJA BAUSE

THE City Police and Namibian Police claimed yesterday that they had foiled a planned cash-in-transit robbery and arrested four men in connection with the incident.

Acting on a tip-off from the public, the Police staked out the Shell service station in Nelson Mandela Avenue, where a cash-in-transit van was supposed to turn up to collect the weekend's earnings.

The four suspects were waiting at the service station but when the security van was delayed, they left.

The Police gave chase and the suspects' car was stopped in Jan Jonker Road, where all four men were arrested.

Two illegal firearms were allegedly found on the suspects, and their car had fake number plates.

At the time of the arrest it was not clear to the Police whether the vehicle was stolen or belonged to one of the suspects.

All four men have been charged with the possession of illegal firearms and attempted robbery.

According to the Police, the men are hardened criminals and well known to them.

One of the suspects, who calls himself 'Killer', was released from jail last month after serving time for armed robbery.
