Govt finds funds for more schools, teachers

THE Education Ministry has sourced money from its capital budget to accommodate the thousands of pupils who could not get admission to schools in the most populated regions.

In a letter to regional directors of education in Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati and Khomas, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Alfred Ilukena, said the money from the underutilised capital budget would be used to appoint more teachers, rent buildings and buy furniture and textbooks.

The decision was made after a meeting of regional education directors in Windhoek last Tuesday.

The regional directors were instructed that schools in their region should admit the unplaced pupils immediately.

These pupils were expected to report to schools for enrolment yesterday.

The regional offices should also start immediately with the selection and appointment of extra teachers.

The Ohangwena Region can appoint 29 more teachers, Oshikoto 31, Oshana 24, Omusati 11 and Khomas 25.

"Should the need arise for additional teachers, motivations on such needs should be taken up with the Office of the Permanent Secretary as soon as possible," said Ilukena.

He said orders for additional textbooks should be placed as soon as the pupils are enrolled and their subject choices are known.

"This also applies to furniture mattresses in cases where hostel accommodation is required," said Ilukena.

All regional directors are required to provide feedback to the Office of the PS before 17h00 on Monday.

"Providing this needed information as instructed and on time will help the Ministry to take the next prompt and appropriate action," said the Acting PS.

Education officials in the said regions have welcomed the new initiative, saying the extra resources will allow them to introduce afternoon sessions to solve the admission problem.

Children not yet placed in schools are urged to report to the regional education offices as soon as possible.
