Monday, January 30, 2006 - Web posted at 6:39:45 GMT Stop sidelining Africa at UN: Pohamba * STAFF REPORTERPRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba says other continents can no longer continue to sideline Africa by excluding it from the main organ responsible for the maintenance of peace and security in the world. |

Addressing diplomats in Windhoek on Friday, Pohamba said Namibia would continue to pursue Africa's push to have two permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council, with all prerogatives and privileges of permanent membership including the right to veto. "Africa calls for the allocation of five non-permanent seats in the reformed and enlarged Security Council," he said during the annual New Year's greeting ceremony at State House. He said Namibia and other countries contributed to UN and Africa Union peacekeeping missions as a priority, although within their "modest means". He said Namibia's contributions to peace missions in Liberia, Sudan and Sierra Leone demonstrated the country's multilateralism at all levels. Pohamba said the world witnessed significant achievements in 2005 but also encountered serious challenges. He cited the decision by G-8 countries to write off debts of some least-developed countries as a gratifying move. He called on developing countries continue with multilateral trade negotiations and integration of their economies into the world economy. "What is needed at this crucial stage is the political will and commitment to forge a new global consensus to strengthen international economic co-operation and to revitalise global economic development," he said. |
