Health sector to be scrutinised in parliament

* LINDSAY DENTLINGER

THE poor state of the country's health facilities is to come up for discussion in the National Assembly in March.

The DTA's McHenry Venaani last week gave notice to the House that he will expect parliamentarians to debate and make recommendations on health administration in the country.

Venaani said he would introduce the motion based on the premise that the country's health sector had "reached a state of crisis".

Among the issues that are set to come up for discussion are the poor state and unhygienic conditions of health facilities, the administration and planning within the health sector and poor service delivery by doctors and nurses.

The private health sector will also face scrutiny - in particular the high tariffs charged by private practitioners.

Venaani will kick off the discussion on March 14.

Venaani will also introduce a discussion on the high prices of erven in Windhoek and towns.

Venaani alleged that municipalities charged clients differently for erven.

He plans to push for a Parliamentary Standing Committee to open the matter for public discussion and make recommendations to the House.
