Dangerous intersection gets flyover

ONE of Windhoek's most high-risk accident zones is to be revamped this year, after the Windhoek Municipality approved the construction of a flyover over the Western Bypass.

The bypass gained its status as a high-accident zone after the introduction of an intersection connecting the Rocky Crest suburb to the rest of the city.

"In terms of the Roads Authority Regulations, a bypass route like the Western Bypass must be free from any intersections due to the high speed limits allowed on the bypass routes," City of Windhoek spokesman Ndangi Katoma said on Tuesday.

He said when the development of Rocky Crest was approved in 1991, it was intended to provide temporary access to the township while the construction of a flyover was planned as a long-term solution.

The municipality even tried to reduce the speed limit on the road, Katoma said, but this "proved to be less effective and many lives have been lost in car accidents".

Now finally, after construction of the flyover was delayed for years because of financial constraints, the municipality has approved and made funds available in the current financial year.

The project, which is expected to cost the municipality around N$10,5 million, will close off the temporary access to Rocky Crest, and will introduce a number of new roads and intersections in the surrounding area.

Windhoek Construction has been contracted for the work on the flyover.

Katoma said around 50 people would be employed during the contract period.

The construction is expected to start during the second half of March.

Additional work like the relocation of services and bypasses has already started.
