Five people killed in weekend accidents

TRAGEDY struck the Philander family in the South on Saturday when a road accident claimed the three lives of three people and injured four others.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Matengu said 42-year-old Sofia Philander and Immanuel Philander (2) died together with Katrina Rachel (20) when the tyre of a vehicle they were travelling in burst 60 km outside Aroab and overturned.

They were on their way to Keetmanshoop when the accident happened at around 14h30 on Saturday afternoon.

Four other unnamed people were injured, including the driver f the vehicle.

In a similar accident, 28-year-old William Strauss died after the Mazda van in which he was travelling burst two tyres and overturned 20 km from Rehoboth on the way to Kalkrand.

The accident happened around 21h40 on Friday night and Strauss died upon arrival at the Rehoboth Hospital.

His brother, Julius Strauss, suffered serious injuries and was still in the hospital.

At Keetmanshoop, 18-year-old Garfield Konjore died on the spot after he jumped from a moving vehicle in Kroenlein suburb during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Matengu said Police have opened a case of culpable homicide against the unnamed driver of the vehicle.
