Resettlement farms turn into wasteland

LUQMAN CLOETE at KEETMANSHOOP

KARAS Governor Dawid Boois yesterday urged 16 beneficiaries of Government resettlement farms to put their allotments to full productive use.

"Seize this opportunity of being resettled and create sustainable livelihood from the land," Boois said.

He made these remarks during a handover ceremony of allotments to the resettled beneficiaries.

In the Karas Region, 31 beneficiaries have been resettled on 138 403 hectares of land since the inception of the land resettlement programme.

But, according to Boois, 13 of the allotments are lying barren after resettled beneficiaries abandoned them.

"The farms that have previously contributed to the country's GDP have now become wasteland," he said.

Nine beneficiaries from other regions including Ohangwena, Khomas, Oshana, Erongo, Hardap and Omaheke also acquired land in the Karas Region through the resettlement programme.

He noted that some resettled farmers face challenges such as water shortages, but said that the Government is trying its utmost best to render these services with limited resources.
