Villagers want shebeen closed

LUQMAN CLOETE at KEETMANSHOOP

THE community of Gruenau in the South yesterday took to the streets, demanding the closure of a shebeen where the owner had allegedly shot somebody.

In a petition signed by 128 community members, they claimed that the murder was committed at 03h00 in the morning, after the shebeen's trading hours.

"A fellow man was murdered cold blooded at this shebeen, despite screaming and pleading for his life," the petition reads.

The people also appealed for the establishment of a Police station at the tiny settlement, 150 kilometres south of Keetmanshoop.

They say they have to travel 50 kilometres to reach the nearest Police station at Karasburg.

The community say they petitioned two years ago for the opening of a Police station, following an incident where people were hacked with a panga.

"Again we appeal to have a Police station at our settlement, since we can no more tolerate this kind of acts," the petition stated.

The petition was handed over to the Regional Councillor for the Karasburg constituency, Paulus Efraim.
