HIGCSE results pass muster

CHRISTOF MALETSKY

THE Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment says this year's "slightly poorer" results in the Higher International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE) examinations were "satisfactory" considering the fact that the exams were "demanding".

Some 94,6 per cent of candidates obtained a grade four or better.

This meant that only 5,4 per cent of the total entry was ungraded.

A grade three or better is required in the HIGCSE subject for entry to the University of Namibia and universities in South Africa.

"On that basis 73,4 per cent of the subject entries have met this minimum requirement.

To be noted is that fewer than the above-mentioned 73,4 per cent candidates may in the end qualify for admission to university because not all have entered for the required minimum of four HIGCSE subjects," the Directorate said.

Last year 94,7 per cent of candidates obtained grade four or better and 5,3 per cent were ungraded.

As in previous years, a relatively small percentage (12,5 per cent) of the total number of Grade 12 candidates wrote the HIGCSE examination this year.

HIGCSE is intended for candidates who obtained high grades in the Junior Secondary Certificate examination at the end of Grade 10.

It is offered at 56 senior secondary schools in the country and the marking takes place in Namibia.

The IGCSE results will be released in the week of January 22 to 26.
